Specialized Care for Complex Oral Conditions
A glossectomy is a surgical procedure to remove part or all of the tongue, most commonly performed to treat tongue cancer or other severe diseases affecting the tongue.
Why a Glossectomy Is Performed
Glossectomy is typically recommended for patients with:
- Oral or tongue cancer
- Precancerous lesions or chronic ulceration
- Severe trauma or tissue damage
- Infection or disease unresponsive to other treatments
Depending on the extent of disease, the surgery may be categorized as:
- Partial Glossectomy – removal of a portion of the tongue
- Hemi-Glossectomy – removal of one side of the tongue
- Total Glossectomy – complete removal of the tongue
Your care team will determine the appropriate approach based on the size, location, and stage of the condition.

Glossectomy is performed under general anesthesia, often as part of a larger treatment plan for head and neck cancers. In many cases, reconstructive surgery using tissue grafts or flaps from other parts of the body is done at the same time to restore form and function.
After surgery, patients may require a tracheostomy (temporary breathing tube) or feeding tube to aid with recovery and nutrition. Our team ensures that all aspects of post-surgical care are carefully managed and supported.
Recovery from glossectomy involves a combination of medical care, physical therapy, and speech-language therapy. Rehabilitation focuses on:
- Regaining the ability to speak clearly
- Learning safe swallowing techniques
- Nutritional support and meal planning
- Emotional and psychological support
While full recovery can take time, many patients go on to regain significant function with the right support and care.
Our surgical team is experienced in complex head and neck procedures and works in collaboration with oncologists, speech therapists, and reconstructive surgeons to provide truly comprehensive care. We are committed to helping you not only overcome your condition but also reclaim your confidence, independence, and quality of life.
