Expert Care for Advanced Laryngeal Conditions
A laryngectomy is a surgical procedure to remove part or all of the larynx, or voice box, most commonly performed to treat advanced laryngeal cancer. Because the larynx plays a vital role in breathing, speaking, and swallowing, this surgery is complex and life-changing—but also potentially life-saving.
What Is a Laryngectomy?
Laryngectomy may be partial (removing part of the larynx) or total (removing the entire larynx), depending on the severity and location of the disease. It is typically recommended when:
- Cancer affects a large portion of the larynx
- Previous treatments like radiation or chemotherapy have not been successful
- There is a recurrence of cancer
- Severe trauma or dysfunction has damaged the voice box beyond repair
After a total laryngectomy, the airway is permanently redirected through an opening in the neck called a stoma, allowing the patient to breathe.

Laryngectomy is performed under general anesthesia by a highly skilled head and neck surgeon. The procedure may be combined with lymph node removal or reconstructive surgery, depending on the extent of the cancer.
Following surgery, patients typically:
- Breathe through a stoma in the neck
- Lose natural voice production (but can communicate with assistive methods)
- Work with specialists for speech and swallowing rehabilitation
Although laryngectomy changes how you speak and breathe, many patients go on to live active, fulfilling lives. With the help of our care team, patients receive:
- Speech rehabilitation using techniques such as a voice prosthesis, electrolarynx, or esophageal speech
- Swallowing therapy to maintain nutrition and comfort
