Expert Surgical Care for Lymphatic Health

Lymph node removal, also known as lymphadenectomy or lymph node dissection, is a surgical procedure performed to remove one or more lymph nodes. This is often done to evaluate the spread of cancer, remove infected or enlarged nodes, or treat certain diseases of the lymphatic system.

Why Are Lymph Nodes Removed?

Lymph nodes play a vital role in your immune system, acting as filters that trap infection and cancer cells. However, they may need to be surgically removed if:

  • Cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes (common in breast, skin, thyroid, or head and neck cancers)
  • Biopsy is needed to diagnose a suspicious lump or swelling
  • Infection or inflammation is not resolving with medication
  • Lymphatic blockage or drainage issues are causing pain or lymphedema

Removing lymph nodes can help determine the stage of cancer and guide further treatment decisions such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

At our practice, we provide expert, compassionate care for patients undergoing lymph node surgery—whether for diagnostic or therapeutic reasons.

Lymph node surgery is often performed under general anesthesia and may be done as an outpatient or inpatient procedure, depending on the location and extent of the nodes involved. Common areas include the neck, underarm (axillary), groin (inguinal), or abdomen.

Our surgeons use advanced techniques to minimize discomfort and promote healing. A sentinel lymph node biopsy may be used in certain cancers to identify and remove only the first few lymph nodes where cancer is most likely to spread.

Most patients recover well within a few days to a week, though swelling, bruising, or mild discomfort may occur. In some cases, lymph node removal can lead to lymphedema, or localized fluid buildup, especially in the arms or legs. Our care team provides guidance, therapy options, and long-term support to manage and reduce this risk.

Our board-certified surgeons and oncology team work closely with you to create a personalized treatment plan. Whether lymph node surgery is part of a cancer treatment plan or for another health concern, you can trust us to deliver safe, skilled, and supportive care every step of the way.
